NTT-AT launches wireless motion monitoring systems "WMS series"
- Enabling constant monitoring of a remote site or a site which is not permanently staffed -

NTT Advanced Technology Corporation (hereafter referred to as NTT-AT, headquartered in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Kimio Tazaki) is, starting November 8, 2002, marketing the "WMS series" of wireless motion monitoring systems. These all-in-one systems are easy to install and allow the constant monitoring of a remote site or a site which is not permanently staffed.

Unlike conventional wired systems, the new "WMS series" of wireless motion monitoring systems use a camera with a built-in wireless LAN for outside use, making installation work easier and less expensive. Running on a LAN, the system is easy to introduce and manage, and incurs no communication cost for setting up connections to the cameras and receiving video data. Furthermore, since a PC is dedicated to detecting any abnormal event on the screen, no dedicated staff are needed for supervision. Any abnormal motion detected by the monitoring PC can be reported to a number of people concerned by e-mail to their cellular phones or PCs.
NTT-AT aims to sell 100 sets of the "WMS series" during the first year, and will target a broad spectrum of enterprises and public organizations responsible for disaster prevention, security monitoring or nature observation.

[Background and history]
Conventional video monitoring systems using wired cameras have not only required the time-consuming and costly work of laying a communication line but also suffered from limitations in the places where cameras can be installed. In addition, if the connection to a camera uses a public network, a communication cost is incurred for receiving video data. Conventional systems have also required staff dedicated to detecting abnormal events on the screen. This can be problematic when more than one camera must be monitored simultaneously.
NTT-AT has been selling wireless monitoring systems, which solve some of the problems mentioned above. The new wireless system features an all-in-one unit, solving all the above problems and offering the greatest convenience to the user. It uses cameras with a built-in wireless LAN, which incurs no communication charge and can be installed easily in almost any place. Simultaneous monitoring with multiple cameras is possible. Furthermore, the use of the core technology developed by Actlas (headquartered in Yokote, Akita; CEO Shin Sanada) enables a dedicated PC to monitor the screen in place of humans. Upon detecting any abnormal motion on the screen, the PC automatically reports it to a number of people concerned. NTT-AT plans to offer customization of the system to meet a wide range of user needs in the future.

[Main features]
1. A camera with a built-in 2.4-GHz wireless LAN for outside use allows easy, speedy and low-cost installation. In addition, no radio license is required.
2. Since the camera can be powered by a generator or a battery, it can be easily installed in a required site.
3. Since the system runs on the user's LAN, it is easy to integrate and manage the system. In addition, since a LAN is used, no communication charge is incurred for the connections to cameras or for the reception of video data.
4. Since a PC is dedicated to detecting abnormal events on the monitored image, no dedicated staff are needed for supervision.
5. When an abnormal event is detected, the monitoring PC automatically sends an alarm signal to the people concerned by e-mail to their cellular phones or PCs. (Only text data is sent to standard 2G cellular phones. However, video data can also be sent to 3G cellular phones.)
6. Up to 4 cameras can be connected to one PC. It is possible to specify up to 5 areas on the screen for the detection of abnormal motion. (This ability to specify abnormal event detection areas only comes with the WMMS-01PRO.)

[Application examples]
-- Detection of intruders
-- Supervision of the water level of a river, the amount of snowfall, landslides or other indications of natural disaster
-- Supervision of incoming and outgoing vehicles in a parking lot
-- Supervision of inventory at a storehouse or the progress of a construction work
-- Monitoring of natural events, such as the blooming of cherry blossom, the change of color of leaves in autumn, or the growth of arable crops.
