Testing compatibility between "Flet's ADSL" and 8Mbit/s ADSL modems is now possible
NTT Advanced Technology Corporation (hereafter referred to as NTT-AT, headquartered in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Kimio Tazaki) have constructed a testbed for checking the compatibility between Flet's ADSL, which is provided by NTT East, and 8Mbit/s ADSL modems, manufactured and sold by different vendors.
This follows the similar testbed built in December 2001 and already in use for 1.5Mbit/s ADSL modems. The modems that have passed the test will be permitted to display a "Flet's ADSL-compatible" label on them.
NTT-AT will hold the first briefing meeting for modem vendors on Thursday, May 30, and start accepting applications for the test on Monday, June 3.
NTT-AT will also provide a debugging facility, which will enables modem vendors to fine-tune the transmission characteristics of their products.
| 1. Scope of Test |
| |
This testbed allows verification of compatibility in the transmission layer and higher layers. |
| 2. Outline of the certification steps |
| |
(1) |
Modem vendors submit applications for testing to NTT-AT. |
| |
(2) |
NTT-AT connects the modems offered by vendors to the testbed, measures the transmission characteristics of the ADSL layer, tests the compatibility of the upper layers, and determines whether the modem has passed all the tests.
Note: The measurement of the ADSL transmission layer has previously been optional, but is now mandatory. However, the result of this measurement does not affect the decision as to compatibility. |
| |
(3) |
After being notified of the passing of the upper layer tests, the vendor completes and submits the "Agreement to the Use of the Logo" to NTT East. |
| This will allow modem vendors to display a "Flet's ADSL-compatible" label on their products*. |
| |
*In addition, the vendor must meet the following conditions: |
| |
a) |
The vendor must have a Japanese-speaking help desk. |
| |
b) |
The manual for the product must be written in Japanese. |
| |
c) |
The measurement data of the transmission layer are to be made available to the user. |
| |
d) |
It shall be explicitly indicated whether tuning of the ADSL model firmware is necessary at the time of upgrading the DSLAM firmware. |

|
NTT-AT starts accepting applications for testing from vendors |
| |
From the middle of July 2002 |
| |
|
Test results are notified. |
| |
From the middle of August 2002 |
| |
|
Vendors submit "Agreement of the Use of the Logo" to NTT East. |
| 4. Test fee |
| |
Approximately 1.7 million yen per modem model. |
| |
* |
If the test is for an upgrade of an already certified product, with some modification, e.g., in firmware, the test fee is approximately 150 thousand yen per modem model. |
| |
* |
For each use of the debugging facility, 95 thousand yen per day plus 10 thousand yen. |
