NTT-AT to sell file encryption software, which combines digital signatures with fingerprint authentication
Digital signatures and fingerprint authentication are combined to prevent masquerading and alteration
NTT Advanced Technology Corporation (hereafter referred to as NTT-AT, headquartered in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Kimio Tazaki) and SecuGen Japan, Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Shigetaka Akiba) have combined file encryption software (incorporating digital signatures), FILELOCK II, developed and sold by NTT-AT, with SecuGen Japan's fingerprint authentication system, to produce the highly secure "FILELOCK II Fingerprint Authentication Version." NTT-AT will sell the product, starting January 10, 2003.
FILELOCK II software encrypts files on a personal computer to prevent unauthorized reading or alteration by third parties. Encrypted files can be stored on floppies, CDs, or servers, and only specified users are permitted to read them. The authentication of the reader and the verification of the digital signatures are carried out using public keys that can be transmitted by e-mail.
In conventional encryption software, a digital signature was used to verify a PC, and a password was used to authenticate the person using the PC. The problems with such software were that reliance only on a password did not provide adequate security, and operation was not simple. In the new software, fingerprint authentication has been added to increase security in the authentication of the user and also to simplify operation. The price of FILELOCK II Fingerprint Version is 6,900 yen per user, and the fingerprint authentication device costs from 25,800 yen.
NTT-AT will continue to cooperate with SecuGen Japan, Ltd. to press ahead with the inclusion of fingerprint authentication in the software used in electronic government and electronic local administration solutions.
