NTT Advanced Technology Corporation

NTT-AT to sell a media converter, Mediapop, whose size and power consumption are one-tenth of those of conventional products

Enables easy and low-cost FTTD (Fiber To The Desk)

NTT Advanced Technology Corporation (hereafter referred to as NTT-AT, headquartered in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Kimio Tazaki) will, starting March 2003, sell an easy-to-use media converter, Mediapop. Both E/O and O/E conversion functions are housed in an extremely small connector case of RJ-45 type.

The new easy-to-use media converter, Mediapop, is based on technology developed by NTT Microsystem Integration Laboratory, with improvements made by NTT-AT for commercial application. It occupies less than one-tenth of the space and consumes less than one-tenth of the power of conventional products.
Since Mediapop can be plugged into the LAN port of an existing personal computer or a hub, optical interconnection between PCs and other devices can be made very compact.
Today, as optical fiber access services and optical home networks spread among residential customers, media converters are often used for easy connection of devices to the optical network. However, existing media converters are so bulky that it has been necessary to provide space for their installation. The soon-to-be-sold Mediapop achieves a dramatic reduction in both size and power consumption through redesign of the converter's structure and circuitry.

Since Mediapop has an RJ-45 type plug-in interface, it can be plugged directly into a LAN port of existing LAN devices based on 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX, so FTTD can be achieved easily and compactly. Furthermore, high-speed communication is made possible for large LANs over a distance of up to 2 km, and for factories and other environments prone to interference.

Starting March 2003, NTT will start selling Mediapop at 20,000 yen (provisional price, consumption tax not included) as a key component for FTTD. It will target the optical-wiring-related industry as potential customers.

Before commencing sales in March, NTT will exhibit Mediapop at the Fiber-Optics EXPO to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from January 22 to 24, 2003.
