MU Connector

A compact and self-retentive multi-ferrule optical backpanel connector, called the MU connector. It can be installed in advanced optical transmission, exchange, and subscriber systems or high speed data application.

• High packaging density
The Mu connector is designed with four times the packaging density than conventional NTT backpanel connectors. 16 plugs can be mounted in a width of 100mm on a printed circuit board.
• Zero reaction force onto backpanel
A self retentive mechanism incorporates two latches, a double shell backpanel housing, and a floating backpanel housing structure. When a printed circuit board is mated with the backpanel, the printed circuit board housing latches directly to the inner housing of the backpanel housing which flaots independently of the outer housing of the backpanel housing. The ferrule compression force is absorbed by the connector latches and is not exerted on the backpanel.

Design provides for two option (2.4 mm and 3.2 mm)

The ferrule endfaces of the MU plugs are polished to a spherical convex shape using Advanced PC polishing technology. The MU connector has a high return loss of greater than 40 dB and maintains high reliability. The average insertion and return loss are 0.07 dB and 50.3 dB, respectively.

The MU connector plug is a design based on the SC connector technology. There are two types of plug configurations: simplex and duplex types. These plugs are commonly used for MU-A series (high density, low profile interconnect applications) and MU-B series (backpanel connector applications).

As the number of the optical connectors increase so does the compression force applied to the backpanel. This increased compression force can deform the backpanel. As the result, the number of optical connectors mounted on the backpanel is limited. To overcome this problem, the MU connector employs a self-retentive mechanism which takes the ferrule compression force off the backpanel and enables greater packaging density than conventional optical backpanel connectors.
